Two Arrests. Two Parties. Two Different Priorities
A story of how Democrats get arrested to protect us, while Republicans get arrested for harming us.
Navarre, FL - In Florida politics, you can learn a lot about a party by what its leaders are willing to risk getting arrested for. The leaders of the two major political parties in Florida found themselves on opposite sides of that line — and the contrast couldn’t be clearer.
On one side, Nikki Fried, chair of the Florida Democratic Party, and Former Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book were arrested as they protested the passage of a near total abortion ban outside Tallahassee City Hall. After her arrest Fried said, “…there are certain things that are just worth fighting for…It’s not even about the women who were arrested tonight. It was about protecting women across the state.” Leader Book said, “We don’t just talk the talk, we walk the walk and in this situation that meant sitting alongside individuals who are protesting”. The two Democratic leaders were arrested alongside nearly a dozen other protesters for trespassing or refusing to leave City Hall grounds after 7:46 PM EDT (sunset). The leaders stood in protest with the support of Women’s Voices of Southwest Florida, Florida National Organization for Women, and Bans off Miami. All charges were eventually dropped.

On the other side, you have Evan Power —leader of the Florida Republican Party — who was arrested after allegedly driving drunk and hitting a parked car. Released video of the arrest shows the staggering Republican leader struggling to get through a law enforcement issued sobriety test.

Power pled guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving and was sentenced to 6 months probation and 50 hours of community service. He ended up buying out the 50 hours of community service by paying $500. He also appears to have paid restitution to the owner of the parked car he hit while allegedly intoxicated.
And guess what? There’s even more to this story. Bodycam footage shows Evan Power was driving recklessly, with alcohol on his breath, and in possession of a loaded Ruger .38-caliber pistol in the center console, loaded with five rounds of ammunition, including one in the chamber. That weapon was later returned to him, with no court mandated firearm safety classes.
Now this isn’t the first embarrassing scandal to come from a leader of the Florida Republican Party. Evan Power ascended to Chair of the Florida Republicans after Christian Ziegler stepped down in the aftermath of sexual assault allegations by a woman who participated in a threesome with his wife, ultra-conservative Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler. You literally can’t make this sh*t up. The sexual assault charges were cleared but the felony charge of video voyeurism was likely not consensual. That being said the voyeurism charges were dropped after a judge found Ziegler’s phone was searched illegally. Now, the Zieglers are in legal battle with the City of Sarasota and law enforcement. The leader of the party of “law and order” is literally going after local law enforcement officials in the city of which he resides.
One word — arrested; but completely different context.
What You Risk Matters
Chairwoman Fried’s arrest was tied to advocacy - a public stand on a woman’s freedom to decide if, when, and how she grows her family. These other guys are behaving like law-breaking frat boys well into their 40’s. Power and Ziegler’s allegations were tied to personal conduct that puts others at risk of harm and had nothing to do with public service.
That distinction matters.
Because leadership isn’t just about what you say in press conferences or post on social media. It’s about what you’re willing to stand up for. The actions of our party’s leadership say a lot about their judgment.
A Tale of Priorities
This contrast isn’t just about a few individuals and I am not trying to both sides this issue at all. What we’ve seen with these arrests reflect something larger about the priorities of each party.
The Florida Democratic Party is signaling a willingness to confront issues like healthcare, reproductive freedom, and housing affordability head-on — even when it’s politically risky.
Meanwhile, the Florida Republican Party continues to project an atmosphere of political unseriousness, that would be laughable if the stakes weren’t so high. While headlines are being made for all the wrong reasons, Floridians are dealing with very real problems:
Skyrocketing cost of living.
Housing that is completely out of reach.
Healthcare that remains unaffordable for too many families.
This is not an abstract debate. These are the daily lived experiences of so many people who are working 2 or 3 jobs simply to make ends meet with nothing to show for it. Retired veterans picking up an Uber or Lyft job because the cost of living has exceeded their social security and retirement checks.
The Republican regime is joy riding in the streets, getting dirty in the sheets, and Democrats are clamoring for a morsel of political power to do something on behalf of Floridians.
When one party’s leadership is associated with advocacy around healthcare, and the other with reckless personal behavior, it raises a fair question: Who is focused on improving people’s lives?
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t about celebrating one arrest or sensationalizing another. It’s about understanding what each moment represents. Chairwoman Fried understands what it takes to press a public issue, engage with local leaders, and bring attention to the tangible policies that improve our lives. Chairman Power represents a lapse in judgment with potential consequences for public safety. Voters should take note of the difference because the choice could not be more stark.
