The Voter Purge Act: A Solution in Search of a Problem
How Republicans plan to cheat and steal to "win" the 2026 election. Will we let them?
Navarre, FL - Republicans are calling it the SAVE Act, but we aren’t. We are here to be honest about what this actually is. It’s a VOTER PURGE ACT. The goal isn’t to protect elections, but to make voting harder for millions of eligible Americans under the guise of solving a problem that doesn’t even exist.
Let’s Start With the Lie
The entire premise of the Voter Purge Act rests on a false claim that non-citizens are voting in U.S. elections. THEY ARE NOT! In fact the person responsible for ensuring that only eligible voters cast a ballot in an election is the Supervisor of Elections. The majority of Supervisors of Elections in the state of Florida are registered Republicans, and conservative-led study after study reveals the same thing: non-citizen voting does not happen in America. It is not rare and concerning, it is not rare and trending upward, it is so rare it is statistically insignificant. There is no wave, no crisis and no justification for what Republicans are planning to do to all of us.
What the Voter Purge Act Does
Republicans refuse to address the real issues surrounding elections: long lines at the polls, limited early voting days and locations, and lack of an Election Day holiday. Instead MAGA politicians like Jimmy Patronis want to create new barriers for people who already have the legal right to vote.
The Purge Act requires us to show proof of citizenship - not just attest to it with legal forms of identification, but to prove it with specific paperwork only certain government agencies can provide. That includes:
A certified birth certificate
A valid U.S. passport
and in many cases additional documents like:
Marriage Certificate
Divorce decrees
Death Certificate (to explain name changes or discrepancies)
On paper, that may sound straightforward but in reality it’s anything but.
The Litany of Traps
Millions of Americans do not have immediate access to these documents. It’s not because they are not U.S. citizens, but because life gets complicated.
People lose their important documents in natural disasters like:
Hurricanes
Floods
Tornadoes
Fires
Women who change their names need additional documents to legally justify the name change
Seniors born in rural areas may not have easily retrievable birth records
Most Americans don’t have $500 in the bank for an emergency, let alone the money to acquire a passport
These government mandates are not safeguards, they’re purposeful filters, meant to take away our freedom to vote in 2026.
Who Does This Impact
Voter purges like this impact:
Poor White Married Women
Elderly Voters
Middle-class voters
Latino Voters
I am purposely leaving Black voters out of this equation, because Black folks are already hip to MAGA’s voter suppression game. Black people have hopscotched, hitch hiked, and high jumped over the hurdles of voter suppression since The Voting Rights Act. But white, poor, and low income rural voters are not hip to this game. They aren’t used to being the target of political attacks. In other words, the people who aren’t used to facing the most friction in the political process are about to be scrubbed chafe. So in short, this isn’t about election integrity, it’s about electoral engineering.
We’ve Seen This Before
This move by the majority of white men in power in Washington DC isn’t new. What’s new is the white conservative women in power who are ready and willing to sign away the freedoms of their daughters and granddaughters. We know it’s a modern version of an old playbook—one that replaces literacy tests and poll taxes with paperwork requirements and government office hurdles. The language has changed but the intent hasn’t.
Again, when Black folks were levied poll taxes, they saved the funds to cover the fee. When Black voters were given literacy tests, they memorized the Preamble, the Gettysburg Address and surpassed the hurdles. That’s why white election officials had to institute games like guessing jelly bean in a jar or bubbles around a bar of soap. The Voter Purge Act feels like war to white voters and a mere skirmish to Black ones. Simply because after the Voting Rights Act Black people had a protection from overt voter prevention, but elected officials always made the process cumbersome to suppress participation. It was not done through force, but through friction, and with this new regime in place, they have not directly ruled out force.
The Real Cost
Debating with supporters of voter purging is not my ministry. The freedom to vote is foundational to the nation, and when politicians attach that freedom to a stack of costly documents that millions of people don’t have readily available, they are protecting tyranny not democracy. So I’m here to call this what it is: a law to purge the voter rolls, control which Americans get to participate in elections, and create real barriers with predictable consequences. Now stop complaining and spend that energy getting election ready in 2026.
