The suggestion was that Nixon needed to purchase more “professional” clothing to be taken seriously as a statewide candidate.

But this controversy is not really about fashion.

It is about class. It’s about race.

It is about the belief that political credibility must be accompanied by an expensive wardrobe, polished presentation, and proximity to wealth. It is about respectability politics and the additional burden placed on Black women to prove that they belong in spaces of power.

Angie Nixon has built her political career alongside working families, organizers, and communities that are routinely overlooked by Florida’s political establishment. Her value as a candidate should not be measured by the price of her shoes. It should be measured by her record, her ideas, and her commitment to the people she is asking to represent.

The controversy also raises an important question for Alexander Vindman. Although the remarks did not come directly from his official campaign account, they came from someone deeply connected to his candidacy and actively advocating for his election; his wife Rachel Vindman.

What responsibility does a candidate have when a close surrogate attacks an opponent in a way that appears classist, elitist, or racially insensitive?
